Continuing with the spoilers (and attempting a cut) well, somebody loses an arm before the fight is over because, more often than not, that's the only way to neutralize someone--get rid of the lightsaber, which is the equivalent of getting rid of the hand or the arm, because it isn't as if you can nicely ask an opponent in a duel to put down his/her weapon, when they can just call it back using the Force
