Bizarrely, I got a round of applause in my creative writing class today. 0_o Ph34r my 1337 descriptive skillz or something, I guess...
five minutes on the assigned word 'basement':
The lights flickered on with a faint buzz -- all except the one directly above the washing machine, which blinked faintly and then died, mercifully hiding the mess of laundry in half-heartedly sorted piles. The rest of the room, though, was laid bare under the harsh fluorescents. Pink insulation padded the ceiling in contrast to walls of hard, bare concrete. Last season's jackets hung from the wooden frame of the stairs in a chaos of jewel tones. A maze of pipes traversed the ceiling, occasionally interrupted by a faucet or intersection. A blue canister of mothballs silently threatened any insect that might dare to threaten the items stored. Piles of boxes were laid all around -- near the back, carefully labeled and organized, but haphazardly tossed at random closer to the stairs. Even without permanent ink declaring the contents, though, it was obvious what these boxes held from the items protruding from their tops.
Kind of wandering at the end there, but I was just about to get going again when she called time. All sorts of interesting random thoughts on what COULD have been in those boxes, but I guess now the world will never know. I wouldn't have clapped for this, so my classmates are either easily impressed or really really nice. I guess neither is really a bad thing...
So I can tell I'm gonna like this class just for the ego trip. :P All kidding aside, I like the teacher and she seems pretty passionate about the subject, and I'm not hating my peers either. So good stuff. I wasn't so fond of her asking us to rate each others' five-minute in-class thingies (see above) from one to five, but that's just a personal opinion probably rising from the good old low self-esteem. Anyways. Interesting assignments, too, though of course the second-semester-senior part of me is sobbing "homework? what??" I will beat my inner SSS into submission, really. And also the cold I'm battling -- staying in bed all weekend has caused it to decrease from a family-size box of kleenex per day magnitude to the point where I can make it through school on just one of those little travel packs. ... Yes, my life has been revolving around tissues for the past week. That's kinda sad.
