It was Movies That Mess With Your Mind night here -- we followed Memento with Pi and Donnie Darko. The disintegrated bits of my mind have now become even smaller and more broken bits, I think. :P

Spectacular movie.

I watched it with a bunch of people, one of whom had seen it before... backwards. And, of course, by backwards I mean forwards. Someone had cut the movie up, then arranged it so that the black and white parts come first, then the color parts come in reverse order, and the person I watched it with saw it that way before seeing it the normal way. She thought it was a boring movie.

Yeah, I can see that killing it a little... although I'd think it would still be interesting, sort of. For one thing, you would miss the significance of all the stuff he's talking about on the phone, the whole "remember Sammy whats-his-face" and everything. And the backwards idea is just such an unbelievably cool narrative device, and carried off so well -- and it parallels the narrator's plight so neatly, so that at the beginning of the movie there's an entirely different set of facts that seem to be true about who is "good" and "bad" and can be trusted than at the end of the movie.
