So, classes next semester. Right now I'm leaning towards 6.042, 6.002, 6.170, and 21W.772 (Digital Poetry). Which adds up to 54 units which seems like something I can handle, though from what I've heard units and hours spent on a class per week don't necessarily line up as neatly as they're supposed to...

6.002 is Circuits & Electronics, the next one of the four sort of core classes for everyone in Course 6, which is Electrical Engineering & Computer Science. It should be interesting, and a ton of people on my hall will be taking it (somewhere in the neighborhood of 12 of us at last estimation).

6.042 is Math for Computer Science -- it's a requirement for 6-3, the computer science track of EECS. I'm sort of looking forwards to it -- I don't mind proofs much and I rather like probability and it looks like there's all sorts of neat logic-y stuff, the kind of math that appeals to me as opposed to the kind of math I'm taking right now (differential equations). Or so I hope. Also hoping that there'll be a bunch of other people taking it here; there probably will be at least a few considering that about half of the 16 frosh on my floor are Course 6 and I think at least half of that is 6-3 (as opposed to 6-1 which is electrical engineering or 6-2 which is some of both).

6.170 is named "Laboratory in Software Engineering" -- I'm told it's a pretty murderous class, but it's also a 6-3 requirement so it's going to have to happen sooner or later. I'm hoping there'll be a fair number of people on the hall taking this one too, 'cause if there aren't I'm probably putting it off until there are. It's taught in Java, which I'm pretty familiar with, so that should help a bit, but it's still going to be a huge time commitment and definitely definitely going to force me to quit procrastinating so much or else die a horrible death. And I do want to take the class in the fall rather than spring, because I think I wasn't as distracted and unmotivated at the end of fall semester as I am now...

21W.772 is (as mentioned) Digital Poetry, and as I scan the description to try to summarize I'm remembering it was one of the classes I was fascinated by way back when almost a year ago before I actually came here. And I'm told the professor is fun but not demanding, which I guess I'll need while taking 6.170. I was kicking around the idea of taking two HASS classes next semester -- but I suspect this won't be a wise time to experiment with an extra class.

So... opinions? Older & wiser folk, am I going to go insane by November?

OK... thanks for the advice. Assuming exams go well, my GIRs are covered except for the humanities (yay). Have you heard anything about MAS.160? My advisor just sent out a list to everyone in the MAS frosh program about it, and from the catalog blurb and what he says ("the useful parts of 6.003, combined with a bunch of other material such as how data compression and wireless digital systems work") it sounds interesting though pretty math-intensive...

Never heard of it, though MAS classes tend to be friendlier, fluffier, and more project-oriented, and it might make 6.003 easier later. Also Prof. Picard is really cool, or so I hear.
On the other hand, there might be a lot of grad students in the class - and few ugrads - which might be intimidating. You might try talking someone else on the hall into taking it, maybe?
