-- But before I ramble, I'll say happy birthday to my big sister who I refer to here as Rinoa, and who will probably not read this, but happy birthday anyways. She's eighteen today.
So I finally got to King Richard's Faire today. It was awesome, as always. Once more my very favorite part was their hilarious Royalty Sings and Dances show... it never fails to crack me up. This year it was "Who Wants to Marry a Monarch?", with such musical gems as "Your Heads Will Roll When I'm Queen". (Think "I Just Can't Wait To Be King", from The Lion King. Except twisted.) The "Shakespeare's Shadows" show was disappointing -- probably mostly because the stage they were performing on is surrounded on three sides by seating, so they were trying to play to the whole audience, but with no anachronistic amplifying equipment the effect was mostly to make it so each part of the audience heard a different third of the lines. Also, I guess I was kind of hoping for something a bit more creative than just performing Macbeth.
The shopping, as always, was fascinating and varied. Lots of leathercrafters this year, including at least two shoe shops. Interesting costume shops, many hat/flower garland places. Neat jewelry -- I got a necklace with a celtic-knot type charm. And a KRF t-shirt, because I decided I really desparately needed one. And the CD of one of the groups I heard playing, because I fell in love with the song "Nonesuch" that they performed.
The jousting was marred by the people in the front who insisted on standing, meaning that all the people sitting on the ground behind them couldn't see a thing. Yes, we know you're wearing nice costumes. So are we. Suck it up, all right? There were a few nasty comments exchanged, which kinda ruined some of my mood. It seems like at faires everyone is usually pretty considerate, kind, have a decent sense of humor, especially the ones who get dressed up for the event. But there were people exchanging decidedly 20th century insults and being all blech -- and I'd rather hold on to that illusion that this is a place a bit freer from bickering and petty everyday problems. Oh, well.
Then we went to Papa Gino's for pizza after, with half of the family still wearing costumes, which made me grin. Love seeing the reactions, or lack thereof.
Oh yeah, and:
