Tell me more of this Sunshine. I heart Robin McKinley. I've read Spindle's End, Rose Daughter, Beauty and A Knot in the Grain and Other Stories. I'm looking on Amazon, and I'm seeing that she has several other books. Is Sunshine good?

[identity profile] godream.livejournal.com 2003-11-06 05:33 pm (UTC)(link)
Yeah, Robin McKinley is awesome. Sunshine was pretty different from her other stuff, though. Darker, and according to this library copy that I should return sometime, adult sf/f and not YA. It's a vampire story (which made me jump up and down in glee) so I guess dark is kinda a given... pun intended, sorry.

Anyways. IIRC, a lot of reviews had it in for Sunshine because they were less than fond of the style McKinley adopts here. First person, pretty informal, and occasional several-page tangents in the middle of events. I loved it, probably because I tend to write that way and it made me feel all warm and fuzzy inside to see that it's actually possible to do that style well. And she really does, I didn't think the occasional wandering was disruptive to the story at all.

And oh yeah, there was plot too, and It Was Good. I'm not sure I could summarize without spoiling, but I thought it was very interesting. Go read it! :)

Regarding other books: let's see. I read Deerskin a fair while ago, and I suspect it deserves a second reading. It was also pretty mature, and I suspect I'd have more of a clue what was going on now, as opposed to when I was twelve or whatever. The point is I can't say much about it. I do remember liking The Blue Sword (I think that was the name) a lot, and I think there was a sequel to it...? Or maybe that was the sequel to something else. Ah, Amazon tells me it's the sequel to the Hero and the Crown. So IIRC, those are also recommended.

So, about tomorrow. Do you want to meet me at Rivers or the mall. If we meet at Rivers we could order a pizza. If we meet at the mall, I will be driving you illegally. Tell me what you think. You also need to see the new athletic center.

Hmmm. Though I do wanna take the nostalgia tour of Rivers, I think it'd still be easier for me personally to meet at the mall -- but it is NOT a big thing either way, and I definitely don't want to pressure you into Doing Bad Things like the driving stuff if you're not comfortable with that. *shrugs* So at the risk of starting the "no, YOU decide" game... whatever. :)

I don't mind driving you, it's my mom. So, 6 at the mall?

[identity profile] godream.livejournal.com 2003-11-06 05:36 pm (UTC)(link)
Excellent. :D Can't wait!

Should I get the parentals to drive me home? And when should I tell them to pick me up?

'Cause I'm incapable of figuring these things out for myself, you see. :P
